Where does free speech begin, and where does it end?

So this minor league hockey player was suspended for referring to the band Foo Fighters as “Foo Faggots”.  I thought it was pretty funny personally … Not because I ‘m homophobic, just because it was plain funny “Guy” talk. Why does it seem as if free speech only applies to certain groups of people?  This is free speech isn’t it?  I mean if the occupy pukes are covered under the First Amendment to take over public areas, break things, and shit on the American Flag—I dare say that this athletes statement should have been covered too.
The bottom line is that people need to grow thicker skin and stop being so pseudo-offended.  I say this because I find it hard to believe that anyone is truly offended by this; however, if they can get some publicity and can try to ruin this young man’s career in the wake, well then,  they will pretend to be offended. Thoughts?
